Are you dealing with varicose veins? Even though they may not be causing any symptoms, the cosmetic concern alone may lead you to begin exploring your treatment options. Sclerotherapy is a proven procedure that can safely and effectively remove varicose veins to enhance your appearance.
What are Varicose Veins?
Veins are blood vessels responsible for transporting blood back to your heart to be re-oxygenated and sent through another circuit throughout your body. The varicose vein is a dysfunctional vein that has a faulty one-way valve. This valve will prevent blood from flowing back into the vein when it is functioning normally. When this valve is not functioning properly, it cannot prevent blood from back flowing into the vein, leading to its characteristic distorted appearance.
Varicose veins are highly visible from the surface of the skin. They tend to have a twisted appearance because of the pressure that builds up in them due to pooling of blood. They are normally colored blue or green. Spider veins are a type of varicose vein that is much smaller and presents with a branched or web-like appearance. Spider veins are typically red or purple in color.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a proven varicose veins removal procedure that has been around for decades and is still widely used today. The goal of the procedure is to destroy the walls of the dysfunctional vein. We do this by using a fine needle to inject a sclerosing solution into the dysfunctional vein. This irritates the walls of the vein and causes its collapse. The varicose vein will eventually be absorbed by your body. The blood that was once transported through it will be rerouted into healthier blood vessels nearby.
What Should I Do After My Sclerotherapy Procedure?
You will be given a complete set of instructions for post-procedure care at your appointment, but there are some things that you may want to know in advance. You should avoid shaving your legs for a few days following your procedure. Avoid jacuzzis or hot baths for a few days after your treatment, as this could dilate your veins.
You will be encouraged to take a walk shortly after your sclerotherapy procedure. You will need to walk some each day for a couple of weeks but avoid vigorous physical activity for a day or two.
